TORONTO, June 17, 2013- Music fans jammed the streets of downtown Toronto and millions of viewers tuned in to Canada’s largest music block party, the Much Music Video Awards to see everyone’s favourite music artists and celebs. Nominated for three MMVAs and guest performer Serena Ryder, rocked the red carpet in a custom VAWK dress by Sunny Fong.

The MMVA winner of Rock/Alternative Video of the Year for her platinum track “Stompa”, accepted the award on the red carpet in a custom VAWK black cut-out and fringe dress complementing her signature style. Serena’s team personally reached out to Sunny Fong to create this look.

“I would love some movement and fringe …. I really want to make sure it’s rock and roll and not too girly “, said Ryder.

No Stranger to red carpets, Sunny Fong has dressed Katy Perry for the MMVAs 2012, Elisha Cuthbert for the People Choice Awards, and Chantal Kreviazuk for her performance for HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

With the success of these collaborations: VAWK has also partnered with eBay to curate an exclusive collection to be launched on August 12, 2013.

CHATTING WITH TRICIA

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013

Since the re-launch of VAWK in 2009, Toronto-based fashion stylist Tricia Hall has been the stylist for all of our runway shows at Toronto Fashion Week and all of our in-house creatives. We recently sat down with Tricia and asked her a few questions to understand her style.

Who are your personal style icons?

Julia Sarr-Jamois, Alexa Chung, Ashley Olsen, Jenna Lyons. I like that they all tend to wear a mash up of looks whether it’s pretty with tough, cute with casual or sleek with geeky chic.

What is your must-have?

I am still searching for the perfect leather jacket; motorcycle jacket preferred, and when I do find it I can’t wait to get it beat up and worn in so it’ll be perfect.

What is your favorite piece in your wardrobe?

My favourite piece(s) would have to be my docs. I own 7 pairs (and counting). I think I’m making up for lost time from my younger days. When I asked my mom to buy me a pair for school she bought me some look-a-likes from Honest Ed’s instead.

What are some things you can’t live without?

Jeans (or any clothing item with pockets), and my iPhone.

VAWK WITH GIO

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

Since our collection was inspired by Madonna and Frida Kahlo, we thought it would be great to create a few graphic-T’s, giving us the opportunity to collaborate with local artist Gio Petrucci. The graphics took ques from Frida Kahlo’s  surreal vision and Madonna song titles like “Open Your Heart”.

.

Gio Petrucci

Born and raised just outside of Windsor, Ontario by two Italian immigrants, Gio Petrucci was taught at an early age what really matters in life: love of family and following your passion.

That pursuit took him to Toronto’s OCAD University to study graphic design. Even before graduating, his openness to new ideas and distinct vision lead him to collaborations with several institutions and individuals including Plaid Magazine, fashion designer David C. Wigley for FAT Arts & Fashion Week, and OCADU itself.

Gio’s artistic expression isn’t limited to a single medium; it can be seen through his work in photography, print design, typography, and his signature collaging.

We were also lucky and thankful to find a local digital printer to bring our vision onto our runway.

KATY PERRY in VAWK at MMVA’s 2012

Monday, June 18th, 2012

.

TORONTO, June 17, 2012—During one of the biggest nights in Canadian music, millions of viewers tuned in to the Much Music Video Awards to see which of their favourite Canadian and international acts would perform, present and ultimately take home an award in what has become Toronto’s biggest music awards ceremony and street party.

International pop music sensation Katy Perry looked stunning on the red carpet in a VAWK gown created by Toronto-based designer Sunny Fong. Known for her catchy lyrics and normally quirky sense of style, the “Wide Awake” songstress is also no stranger to more elegant show stopping looks on the red carpet.

Continually making his mark in the Canadian fashion scene, Sunny Fong has seen recent international media attention for dressing Canadian starlet Elisha Cuthbert in VAWK for the People’s Choice awards, a look which was crowned among the “Top 25 Best Dresses of Awards Season” by People.com.

Fong, who recently launched a more affordable sister collection to the luxury label, is actively growing his business. “This year is all about growing the business internationally. I look forward to continuing our strategy to take VAWK globally, and having an international superstar like Katy Perry wear one of my dresses is amazing” said Fong. VAWK is available at The Room, an upmarket boutique within Canadian retail giant, The Bay.

CHATTING WITH ELISHA CUTHBERT

Monday, January 16th, 2012

.

In collaboration for the People’s Choice awards, VAWK sat down with Elisha Cuthbert to get her take on style and choosing looks for the everyday and the red carpet. We couldn’t resist asking a few more probing questions about her wardrobe, shopping habits and favourite style icon. Check out an excerpt from our conversation with Elisha.

I looked at a few of the VAWK pieces and fell in love with the gold detailing on this dress, I knew I wanted to wear it.

.

VAWK: What do you look for when shopping for everyday wear or selecting a look for the red carpet?

EC: Being a Canadian girl, I tend to shop fairly seasonally. I must say I am not a huge shopper, so when I need a new coat or a pair of boots that is usually when I will hit the stores. I like trends, but I wouldn’t say I follow them. When selecting a look for an event or the red carpet, I tend to go for simplicity with an element of surprise. I prefer simple over extremely daring. The fit is usually what is most important to me, I could find the most beautiful dress, but if it doesn’t fit properly it often ruins the look. When it came to selecting my look for the People’s Choice Awards, I looked at a few of the VAWK pieces and fell in love with the gold detailing on this dress, I knew I wanted to wear it.

VAWK: You have worn VAWK before, what is it about the label that appeals to you?

EC: Having a relationship with a designer is a luxury. It makes the selection process and the look special-for both of us. That said, it isn’t just our history that makes wearing VAWK special. Sunny is great at creating beautiful dresses that are classic but have a modern edge to them. Whenever I see his work I always notice a wow factor. The design elements really showcase distinct detailing and the pieces he creates always fit perfectly. I love the cuts!

VAWK: Who would you consider a style icon?

EC: Definitely Cate Blanchet. I always love the designers she chooses and she wears everything so well.

VAWK: What is one piece in your wardrobe that you wouldn’t be able to live without?

EC: I could live without all of them. (LOL) Several years ago I bought a scarf by Dries Van Noten not knowing who he was, but the detailing and beautiful Indian beading really caught my attention. I would say that that is probably one of my favourite purchases.

HAPPY ENDINGS AT THE PEOPLES CHOICE AWARDS

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Canadian actress and Happy Endings starlet Elisha Cuthbert dazzles in VAWK at the People’s Choice Awards.

Last night, as millions of viewers tuned in to the People’s Choice Awards to see who would take home the hardware and fashion choices of their favourite stars, Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert wowed audiences in a VAWK gown created by Toronto-based designer Sunny Fong.

Known for her current role on ABC’s smash-hit comedy Happy Endings and previous role as Kim Bauer on the FOX hit show 24, Elisha Cuthbert hit the red carpet and later took to the stage in a black silk-chiffon gown with gold leather-lace detailing to introduce one of Country Music’s biggest female stars, Faith Hill.

“When it came to selecting my look for the People’s Choice Awards, I looked at a few of the VAWK pieces and fell in love with the gold detailing on this dress, I knew I wanted to wear it,” said Cuthbert, who has previously collaborated with VAWK designer Sunny Fong for the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s charity fashion show The Heart Truth. “Sunny is great at creating beautiful dresses that are classic but have a modern edge to them. Whenever I see his collections I always notice a wow factor.”

Continually making his mark in the Toronto fashion scene, this partnership builds on Fong’s previous celebrity styling at international events. With previous looks on the red carpets of the Cannes International Film Festival and collaboration with Chantal Kreviazuk for a performance for HRH Queen Elizabeth II in Kreviazuk’s hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, the sky is the limit when it comes to the VAWK label.

These collaborations are just one of the ways in which designer Sunny Fong is actively growing his business. “This year is all about growing the business internationally. I look forward to continuing our strategy to take VAWK globally,” said Fong of his future plans. Elisha’s dress is available in black at The Room, an upmarket boutique within Canadian retail giant, The Bay.
