VAWK LAUNCHING SISTER COLLECTION VAWKKIN

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

TORONTO, January 26, 2012—It’s full steam ahead for Canadian luxury label VAWK by Founder and Creative Director Sunny Fong as the brand announces the launch of VAWKKIN, a line of women’s wear essentials that maintain the design and aesthetic VAWK is known for. The announcement comes hot off successful showings at LG Fashion Week and a great deal of recent media attention after actress Elisha Cuthbert donned a VAWK gown at the People’s Choice Awards in mid-January, the latter receiving nods from FLARE Magazine’s “Top 10 Best Dressed” list, People.com and Marie Claire UK, among other international media outlets.

VAWKKIN suggests the relationship between the two brands. Since inception in 2004, VAWK has seen steady growth in the luxurymarket. In continuing that same momentum, Fong wanted to create a line that alludes to the past while also pointing towards the future. He notes “I was looking for a name that showed a relationship with the original label, the designs and pieces that people have fallen in love with. But I also knew the name needed to imply that there is more to come for the VAWK family of brands.”

Tailored toward the young professional fashion forward female, VAWKKIN is an accessible line at a more inclusive price point with essentials that blend from the office to after work cocktails. “This is just the next step in growing the VAWK brand,” said Fong on the creation of the new label, “the main thing about creating VAWKKIN is that even though the price point is more attainable, it still has the same design philosophy as VAWK, but for everyday wear.”

VAWKKIN consists of pieces that transition seamlessly from day to night, available in blacks and neutrals; another reference to the original line. In introducing the new line to the industry, a preview of the VAWKKIN Fall/Winter 2012 collection will be available to market this spring.

HAPPY ENDINGS AT THE PEOPLES CHOICE AWARDS

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Canadian actress and Happy Endings starlet Elisha Cuthbert dazzles in VAWK at the People’s Choice Awards.

Last night, as millions of viewers tuned in to the People’s Choice Awards to see who would take home the hardware and fashion choices of their favourite stars, Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert wowed audiences in a VAWK gown created by Toronto-based designer Sunny Fong.

Known for her current role on ABC’s smash-hit comedy Happy Endings and previous role as Kim Bauer on the FOX hit show 24, Elisha Cuthbert hit the red carpet and later took to the stage in a black silk-chiffon gown with gold leather-lace detailing to introduce one of Country Music’s biggest female stars, Faith Hill.

“When it came to selecting my look for the People’s Choice Awards, I looked at a few of the VAWK pieces and fell in love with the gold detailing on this dress, I knew I wanted to wear it,” said Cuthbert, who has previously collaborated with VAWK designer Sunny Fong for the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s charity fashion show The Heart Truth. “Sunny is great at creating beautiful dresses that are classic but have a modern edge to them. Whenever I see his collections I always notice a wow factor.”

Continually making his mark in the Toronto fashion scene, this partnership builds on Fong’s previous celebrity styling at international events. With previous looks on the red carpets of the Cannes International Film Festival and collaboration with Chantal Kreviazuk for a performance for HRH Queen Elizabeth II in Kreviazuk’s hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, the sky is the limit when it comes to the VAWK label.

These collaborations are just one of the ways in which designer Sunny Fong is actively growing his business. “This year is all about growing the business internationally. I look forward to continuing our strategy to take VAWK globally,” said Fong of his future plans. Elisha’s dress is available in black at The Room, an upmarket boutique within Canadian retail giant, The Bay.

RESORT 2012 at THE ROOM

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Luxury women’s wear label VAWK launches its first Resort capsule collection at The Room, The Bay, Queen St.

TORONTO, December 5, 2011—Building on the success of the brand, luxury women’s wear label VAWK released its first capsule collection ‘RESORT 2012’ hitting the floor at The Room, The Bay’s upmarket boutique.

Introduced as a surprise opening for the runway collection ‘INSECTICA Spring/Summer2012’ launched at LG Fashion Week on October 20, 2011, ‘RESORT 2012’ offers a collection of chic black dresses with leather detailing.

“Resort is about exploration,” notes Creative Director Sunny Fong of his first capsule collection, “I wanted to offer VAWK women a selection of dresses suitable for a night out at a gala or a trip to an exotic destination.”

Never one to shy away from the most intricate of details, Fong used laser cut lambskin to create an original lace floral and ornithological design, translated in black leather specifically for The Room clientele. Adding romantic touches to each of the garments with an edge, these leather lace details are perfect finishing to multi-layered silk chiffon strapless gowns and cocktail dresses found in the collection.

“I wanted to create a wide range of classic black dresses with a modern touch,” said Fong of the collection, which also includes versatile pieces such as a leather-lace-neck maxi dress and the lantern sleeve tunic dress; the latter doubling both as a mini-dress or a tunic.  “This capsule collection is for the fan of the VAWK dress with a twist.”

VAWK draws inspiration from insects and architecture in latest collection, designer Sunny Fong presents VAWK Spring/Summer 2012 at LG Fashion Week

Luxury women’s wear, VAWK presents its latest collection, INSECTICA Spring/Summer 2012, Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 9:30 p.m. Creative Designer Sunny Fong creates synergy between the structural framework of modern skyscrapers, and the beauty of insects. This marks Fong’s second on-site presentation with LG Fashion Week.

“I wanted to incorporate style and structure from two seemingly different worlds, I was inspired by the organic curves and sharp lines of various insects and those of modern architecture,” said Fong of his latest collection.

The collection exemplifies a feminine palette consisting of washed out tones in blush and seafoam and the use of symmetrical and asymmetrical lines. Fong, in his fifth collection since Project Runway Canada, continues to play with texture and silhouettes as well as colours, reflecting elements found in nature and paying homage to notable architects like Frank Gehry and Mies van der Rohe.

Always keeping consumers in mind, Fong notes that, “I always think of the VAWK women when I design, I listen to consumer feedback and try to incorporate that in the collection, this season it’s a return to dresses.”

Building on the growth and success of the line, now in its third season, VAWK has launched pre-season capsule collections; Resort 2012 hits the floor at The Room at the Bay Queen Street, Toronto, this December.

STEAMWORKING TORO SAFARI

Crisp and fresh clothes are key to a beautiful collection. At VAWK, we rely on Rowenta, our official garment care provider, to keep our fabrics looking their best before they hit the runway. We show you how we used Rowenta to help make our Spring/Summer 2011 collection runway ready:

Cheetah Wrap: Cheetah print was a central theme in our collection. After we hand-died the print, we used the Rowenta Precision Valet Garment Steamer to help the die set and to remove wrinkles from the delicate fabric. We use this steamer, the only commercially rated steamer of its kind in Canada, everyday in our studio. It keeps our clothes looking brand new after they return creased and crumpled from shoots across the country.

Nude Zebra Dress: Stylists remarked that the model in the nude zebra dress looked just that – nude. The slightest wrinkle would have meant the loss of this effect. When this dress, and the entire collection, arrived at the AGO before the show, we had to get it wrinkle free and quickly. We used the Rowenta Pro Compact Steamer to remove creases and stubborn wrinkles that had built up from the previous days’ fittings and travel. This steamer is small and portable, but powerful enough to prepare our entire collection for the most discerning fashion media and magnifying camera lenses.

Safari Pant: The safari pant was a fan favourite. The tailored, body conscious fit demanded a perfectly crisp look. While the Rowenta Focus Iron was a vital tool for the entire collection, its optimized steam distribution was particularly important to keep our safari pant picture perfect.
