SHOOTING IN THE BADLANDS

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

This season we were lucky enough to partner with seasoned fashion professionals on our VAWK Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection creative shoot. We drove two hours outside of Toronto to do a creative in the Cheltenham Badlands Trail in Caledon, Ontario.

.

Chris Vassalos- Photography

Chris is an emerging Canadian photographer currently based in Toronto.

Born to Greek parents, his aesthetic has been heavily influenced by his rich cultural upbringing. He majored in Photography at The School of Image Arts and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Ryerson Polytechnic University. He has always been fascinated by faces.

Whether drawn to the complexity of portraiture or the creative freedom offered by fashion editorial, Chris’ passion for image making stems from his love for a good story.

Ishie – Model

As a veteran model for VAWK since Autumn/Winter 2010, Ishie was our first choice for this shoot. With her razors sharp look and walk, Ishie has graced the pages of many prestigious fashion magazines and has appeared in  major advertising campaigns. KATY PERRY in VAWK at MMVA’s 2012

Monday, June 18th, 2012

.

TORONTO, June 17, 2012—During one of the biggest nights in Canadian music, millions of viewers tuned in to the Much Music Video Awards to see which of their favourite Canadian and international acts would perform, present and ultimately take home an award in what has become Toronto’s biggest music awards ceremony and street party.

International pop music sensation Katy Perry looked stunning on the red carpet in a VAWK gown created by Toronto-based designer Sunny Fong. Known for her catchy lyrics and normally quirky sense of style, the “Wide Awake” songstress is also no stranger to more elegant show stopping looks on the red carpet.

Continually making his mark in the Canadian fashion scene, Sunny Fong has seen recent international media attention for dressing Canadian starlet Elisha Cuthbert in VAWK for the People’s Choice awards, a look which was crowned among the “Top 25 Best Dresses of Awards Season” by People.com.

Fong, who recently launched a more affordable sister collection to the luxury label, is actively growing his business. “This year is all about growing the business internationally. I look forward to continuing our strategy to take VAWK globally, and having an international superstar like Katy Perry wear one of my dresses is amazing” said Fong. VAWK is available at The Room, an upmarket boutique within Canadian retail giant, The Bay.

VAWK BARBIE for TFI 25

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

Photo  |  Silverlight Photography

The Toronto Fashion Incubator’s 25th anniversary gala was recently held at the Royal Ontario Museum’s Crystal on May 3 2012. As part of the celebration, designers across Canada were asked to participate in the Barbie art-as-fashion challenge. VAWK was excited to take on the challenge and designed an avant-garde garment inspired by Barbie while creating a miniature version for Barbie herself.

The VAWK dress was reminiscent of the first outfit worn by Barbie, a black and white swim suit, with a futuristic spin created by graphic lines and shapes and a splash of the signature Barbie pink.

That evening the VAWK creation was modeled on the celebrity filled runway runway by Tara Spencer-Nairn, actor of Corner Gas and The Listener.

KEVIN BAILEY FOR VAWK & VAWKKIN

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

Music is always inspire the collections and it’ is also a vital component to how our collections are presented. Every season we have a live DJ onsite, mixing the latest tracks for our shows. We were like to have Kevin Bailey on board this season for our Autumn/Winter 2012 show at MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto.

Kevin Bailey  |  DJ

Originally from Kingsville ON, Kevin made the move to Toronto in early 2007. Toronto’s nightlife scene provided a diverse selection of clubs featuring a plethora international DJ’s which allowed Kevin to affirm his love for dancing and house music. With the generous help of a few local DJ’s and club promoters, Kevin quickly learned the ropes and began DJ-ing small events around Toronto’s Church/Wellesley village in July 2009. Since then, he’s had the pleasure to spin at some of Canada’s largest and most acclaimed venues.

Kevin’s sound is crisp and clean, with uplifting vocals and energetic beats. He uses his ability to read and connect with crowds to deliver fun and memorable sets. In the future Kevin hopes to begin producing his own tracks and aspires to DJ at events all over the world.

SCI-FI SAMURAI Autumn/Winter 2012

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Presenting his Autumn/Winter 2012 collection inspired by Samurais and Science Fiction, Sunny Fong sent VAWK women down the runway in leather space-caps with Samurai-style hair and 1960’s mod-inspired eyes on contoured faces.

The collection featured ready-to-wear pieces including coats adorned with leather and fox detailing, Samurai inspired jackets in black silk as well as cocktail and floor length dresses in plum silk and copper sequins fusing both Samurai and Science Fiction influences to create a powerful yet elegant collection.

This season marked the debut of our sister collection VAWKKIN where we held a casting call to have everyday women be the first to wear the collection on the runway.  Our special thanks to the over 100 women who applied and an even bigger thank you to the 16 women selected.
