VAWK draws inspiration from insects and architecture in latest collection, designer Sunny Fong presents VAWK Spring/Summer 2012 at LG Fashion Week

Luxury women’s wear, VAWK presents its latest collection, INSECTICA Spring/Summer 2012, Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 9:30 p.m. Creative Designer Sunny Fong creates synergy between the structural framework of modern skyscrapers, and the beauty of insects. This marks Fong’s second on-site presentation with LG Fashion Week.

“I wanted to incorporate style and structure from two seemingly different worlds, I was inspired by the organic curves and sharp lines of various insects and those of modern architecture,” said Fong of his latest collection.

The collection exemplifies a feminine palette consisting of washed out tones in blush and seafoam and the use of symmetrical and asymmetrical lines. Fong, in his fifth collection since Project Runway Canada, continues to play with texture and silhouettes as well as colours, reflecting elements found in nature and paying homage to notable architects like Frank Gehry and Mies van der Rohe.

Always keeping consumers in mind, Fong notes that, “I always think of the VAWK women when I design, I listen to consumer feedback and try to incorporate that in the collection, this season it’s a return to dresses.”

Building on the growth and success of the line, now in its third season, VAWK has launched pre-season capsule collections; Resort 2012 hits the floor at The Room at the Bay Queen Street, Toronto, this December.

We were delighted to have been asked by The Heart and Stroke Foundation to create a red dress for one of the celebrity models in their annual Heart Truth Fashion Show. With only two weeks before our own show at LG Fashion Week, we embarked on a mad dash and created a red dress for actress Elisha Cuthbert. On Thursday March 24th at The Carlu in Toronto, Elisha brought down the house in VAWK while raising awareness for heart health.

On Thursday February 24th, we launched our SS11 Toro Safari collection at an exclusive event at The Room at The Bay for the Friends of TFI and VAWK customers. The evening included a cocktail reception, an interview between Sunny and Bernadette Mora, Editor of FASHION magazine, and opportunity for the guests to customize orders from the collection.

During the interview, Sunny revealed that he developed his love of design from his mother, who made costumes for Las Vegas performers, and that he personally tries on every items from the collections to ensure proper fit. He also offered a sneak peak into our FW11 collection; he is designing a luxurious alternative to puffer jackets for cold winter days.

We would like to thank Nicholas Mellamphy, Megan Loach and Helen Krispis of The Room, Mary Jo Looby and Wanda Ho of the Friends of TFI, Bernadette Mora of Fashion Magazine and photographer Spencer Xiong for making the event a huge success.

We were delighted to work with the Fur Council of Canada as part of their Design Network Program for our Fall/Winter 2010 collection. As part of this initiative to support emerging Canadian talent, and NAFA generously supported the fur used in our collection. The Fur Council invited us to present our fur pieces in their opening night fashion show at the North American Fur and Fashion Exposition in Montreal (NAFFEM). On Monday May 2, we boarded our flight from Toronto to Montreal with excitement for the show ahead.

The fashion show was of the highest calibre and, in our opinion, one of the most polished Canadian shows we have seen. We were honoured to have our collection shown alongside the industries finest fur designers. Sunny was also presented with a beautiful award for his participant in the Design Network Program. We loved seeing our model Danielle, who walked our Fall/Winter 2010 show at the AGO, back on the catwalk at NAFFEM and wearing the same VAWK outfit that she showcased in our show. Thank you to everyone at the Fur Council for their kindness, generosity, and support of VAWK.

Press Release

Montreal, May 2nd, 2010 — Sunny Fong, final laureate of the Canadian edition of Project Runway and one of Canada’s most exciting new designers, is the 2010 addition to the roster of the Fur Council’s of Canada’s Design Network Program, created 12 years ago to bring together beautiful furs and avant-garde fashion design to Canada’s vibrant fashion scene.

The Fur Council of Canada’s Design Network will showcase Sunny Fong’s VAWK collection for Fall/Winter 2010 at the Opening Night Fashion Show of the North American Fur and Fashion Exposition in Montreal (NAFFEM), on May 2nd, 6:00 pm at Place Bonaventure, and at the exhibition hall during the 3 days of the international trade show. Sunny’s new fur designs were produced in collaboration with NAFA, the Toronto-based fur auction, that provided the furs, and with the technical support of Four Seasons Furs.

Design Network has been celebrating the creativity of Canada’s leading fashion designers through collections that draw on Canada’s historic foundations in the fur trade. Each year, the Fur Council calls on the talent of top designers to create unique pieces inspired by the rich textures and versatility of fur. Sunny Fong was chosen for his superior craftsmanship, his precise tailoring, the quality and exclusiveness of his strong and feminine designs, and the luxury goods he creates for sophisticated and discerning women.

VAWK Partner and Business Director, Ben Barry states, “The artistry, and the story behind each garment is what makes VAWK unique in the fashion marketplace.” With his new collection for Fall/Winter 2010, inspired by the beauty that comes from nature, Sunny Fong is step-by-step building VAWK into a global luxury brand.

National and international fashion media recognized VAWK’s outstanding creativity right from his debut collection. In 2009, the Editor-in-Chief of Elle Canada, said to Sunny Fong: “Your clothes could be on any runway, anywhere in the world, anytime.”

So far, more than thirty Canadian fashion design leaders have joined the Fur Council of Canada’s Design Network. They are assisted with fur procurement and technical services and provided with new trends and product information. The FCC promotes the designer’s fur collections through special events and media relations to increase fur’s visibility with media and consumers.

“Fur is showing an even stronger presence in international RTW collections, with designers using it in creative, avant-garde ways, for a younger market,” comments FCC’s President and fur designer Paula Lishman. “We are pleased to support a new generation of Canadian design talent who wishes to give fur a fresh new look.”

Design Network is a program of the Fur Council of Canada, implemented since 1999 with the collaboration of the North American Fur Association (NAFA) and other industry members.
