MUTU ME

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Now that Fashion week is over and the dust is now slowly settling, Ben took me to the AGO to visit the TUT exhibit and to explore the collections of art. Of course there was great Canadian art like the group of seven….Love Harris and Emily Carr. Native art, pop art and modern art and the list goes on. I tried to take pictures in the gallery but was told by security multiple times ‘NO’, but I tried. As we wondered through the labyrinth of art, we found our way to an exhibit from a New York Artist Wangechi Mutu.

Born in Kenya Africa, she creates painted and collaged images of female figures referencing her cultural background. This was no pre-school collage; it was beautiful, ugly, dark, sexy, smart, and truly inspiring. We could have stayed in the room for hours, but we were out of time, the gallery was closing….boooooo!

HEAD FIRST to Spring/Summer 2011

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

For me inspiration comes from both sight and sound. My first steps into my research for our Spring Summer 2011 collection, I looked for the right sound, to carry me through my research, my background music that would be on a loop until I knew all the words. The first album I found was Glodfrapps – ‘Head First’, it came out this spring and I thought the name of the album was appropriate for starting the new S/S 2011 collection, marking VAWK’s one year anniversary since the relaunch last fall.

In the album, with tracks names like ‘Alive’ , ‘Shiny and Warm’, and ‘Dreaming’ .. you can’t help but feel light, bright and happy… a very spring/summer album. There are moments, that bring me back to my childhood back in the mid eighties, chicken wings on the BBQ, the hot sun and iced tea. Loving the positive vibes from the album. *sun
